Strikeforce announced that its Nov. 16 event at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif. will feature the state’s first-ever sanctioned mixed martial arts tournament.

The tournament is a four-man, single-elimination format in the middleweight (185-pound limit) division. It will be completed over the course of the 10-bout fight card with the winner potentially receiving a shot at current middleweight champion Frank Shamrock.

“We’re very grateful that the athletic commission has given us the opportunity to produce a tournament format fight for our fans,” said Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker. “This will be the first step in our efforts to produce more tournaments which, historically, have been a great way to challenge world class athletes and to determine who the best competitor is on any given day.”

According to Strikeforce, the first competitor selected for the tournament is 33-year-old Hawaiian Falaniko Vitale. He is coming off of a 3:02 TKO stoppage of Ron Fields at the promotion’s Sept. 29 event at the Playboy Mansion in Beverly Hills, Calif.

Other fighters rumored for consideration in the tournament, though not confirmed by Strikeforce, include Trevor Prangley and Jorge Santiago.
